I agree with what many of you said during our discussion. We all have the capability of being good, which I define as being honest, kind, and considerate of the rights and feelings of others AND we have the capability of being bad which I define as being deceitful, mean-spirited, and trampling on the rights and feelings of others. Nurture largely determines which way we turn out.
The main concept in this debate is nature versus nurture. Each of us have different ideas of who is responsible for the outcome of children. I believe that the parents play a crucial role in the attitude and persona of their children. This debate has been going on for over hundreds of years. John Locke believed that people were born good, and learned from there culture and Thomas Hobbes believed that people by birth are selfish and care about number one first. Nurture in my opinion is the key.
I agree with Nate about the "nature vs nurture" and how nurture is more affective in determining if someone will become "evil" or "good". This doesn't mean that a person who grows up in a broken home has to follow that pattern. It just means based on how someone is raised it gives them the opportunity to chose to continue a life like that, or change it.
I believe that humans for the most part are "good." I believe its how you were brought up that will affect the outcome of whether you are going to be "good" or "evil" Only you have the power to make you "good" or "evil" though. No one else. At any point on your life you can change who you want to be.
The idea of nature versus nurture was a good statement and I believe it also fits with my first response to this entry. Everyone is pretty much a good person by nature but if we live in a hostile environment or if we are taught not to respect the rights of others then we grow up to reflect those traits. Nobody is evil by nature just as nobody is 100% good. We have to grow and have our life lessons challenge us to move towards one of those two directions.
I guess I mainly believe that humans are "good" meaning that they will not want to hurt others and will try to fit in and help society. I think this "goodness" in people is instictual, not necessarily taught by parents and the environment. The "evil" in people is learned from others and people generally become "evil" as a last resort.
I agree with exactly what mostly everyone said. It all comes down to the debate of nurture vs. nature. I think this iwll determine the difference between "good" and "evil". The way someone has brought up and how strict the children's parents are. It's mostly about knowing right from wrong. It's all about how your brought up. A part of it is brought up by John Locke, we learned about him in sociology. I totally agree with Nate and Alyssa.
I pretty much agree. I think people are good natured but what they do, and the environment around them determines if they turn out good or evil. People are really only evil because there is "good" to compare them to. People want to do evil as a way to challenge the rules set up by society or because they want something whether it be attention, power, etc.
I agree on the theory of nature vs. nurture and how nurture plays more of a dominate role in how you act. I also took a religious view point on the topic by thinking that when people are born they are “pure” and then society and a persons surroundings affects them in positive and negative ways. In conclusion I think people are born good and then changed by the world around them.
I pretty much agree with what everyone else said, the whole idea of nature vs nurture. I think that a person's upbringing has alot to do with what type of person they will grow up to be like. I believe that people are born to be good, and how they choose to live their life can basically "make or break" that concept. Their environment as a child, though, does have alot of deciding factors in how a person might decide to do certain things.
Humans are inherently "evil", but want to be good, and are taught to be good through religion and parenting. I think in general when someone makes you angry or upset your natural instinct is to hurt them in some way, but good judgement that we've learned keeps us from doing that. If you think about it in terms of younger kids playing on a playground: they genuinly want to like each other, but if one does somehting to upset the other then they may start to get pushy or start calling each other names because they "don't know better." It is human nature to fight.
I agree with most of the people over the nature vs. nature. People can be both good and evil, really depends on your definition of "evil". I believe that the person is how there brought up, BUT they could over come there bad situation and be better. I also agree with how a person will do anything to survive, it all comes down to how they want to be in life.
Basically I agree with what everyone has said about nature vs nurture, but I think humans are born primarily instinctual, which I guess could be interpreted as evil. The parents or guardians influence the person greatly, having a huge effect on who they will be when they have fully matured.
I believe that the whole concept of good and evil stems from the fact that humans are selfish, and will do things to better their own well being. The people who can overcome this urge, and recognize what is right in a particular situation despite what is best for themselves, can be recognized as "good". The evil aspect comes from those who may be week and unable to resist their natural ways. I also believe that all of this depends on how people are brought up, and what our society expects us to do as a civilization.
since everyone agrees with this nature vs nurture why wouldn't i. i think that people are born good and expirences are what influence them to be good or evil. i also think you can lie and still do bad things that aren't that serious and still be a good person, it depends what you consider evil.
I feel that humans are born with a clean slate, not evil nor good. However, the main factor in understanding this concept is "nature vs. Nurture". When you are born, you are naturally intended to be good, but as you grow older society(nurture) corrupts your morals . Society uses propaganda, magazines, and the television to corrupt your mind, and make you live your life the way they want you to. However, if you don't allow society to overpower your morals that nature gave you then will naturally live a "good life". In my opinion, nature is the key to goodness, and nurture only leads you to evil beliefs and wrong way to live your life.
I believe that the “good” in people is what is initially there, but that there is always an underlying “evil”. I don’t believe in nature vs. nurture but in nurture and nature. The nurture that a person receives is the deciding point in what form of their nature show, initial “good” or underlying “evil”; in this respect nurture and nature work together to form a persons “goodness” or “evilness”.
I belive that humans by instinct act on what will give us the most, what is in our own best intrest. And that can many times be thought of as evil. Humans have the possibility or both great deeds of goodness and are able to commit horrific acts of evil. The parents (or other parent-figure) plays a huge role on what type of human we become.
Ya i agree with what everyone said. Ill add my 2 cents. I beleive Culture and the your upbringings and the morals you learn as u grow up has a lot to do whether or not ur "good"or "ëvil". What may not be considered eveil in African Death Tribes culture are probably considered evil in our culture.
i think that humans are basically good, and it is the environment that they grow up in and the influences that they have in their lives that determine the kind of person they become. so yeah, it all goes back to nature vs nurture. i think humans are programmed to be social and we strive to connect with others, but there are exceptions obviously, liek serial killers. in that case im gonna say that they had a bad childhood and something was just very wrong in their life.
I think that people are naturally survivalists whether that means literally trying to stay alive in the wild, or trying to go through high school with a good reputation. As a little kid, you may discover that putting down others sometimes makes you look cooler and gets you friends or at least makes you popular. Being able to anger someone while keeping your own cool when you're a little kid anyway, can make you look powerful or cooler. It's up to our parents and teachers and all older influential people in our lifes to teach us why these ways of "surviving" in the world are wrong and what is ok to do. It can still be up to the kid to decide whether to take the advice. This decision can be swayed by how much you respect the person telling you, or if you understand why it is the way it is, or if it seems to make a difference whether you follow the advice or not. If you understand how you wouldn't want to be insulted so why should you insult others, or if you understand why the person trying to anger you is doing it, it is easier to take the advice of not getting angry or insulting anyone. Especially if you look up to someone and think want to be like them and they say something, you're much more likely to take their advice. As for seeing why it makes a difference, you may notice for example that not insulting people makes you even more popular, or not getting angry at insults makes the insulter lose interest once they see that it's getting them nowhere. Now, some places like Hollywood almost require you to be ruthless, and so it is expected and neccesary to survive in that world and anyone in that world will understand, if not agree with, why you need to act meaner or more controversial. So, in conclusion, people will do want to do whatever they need to in order to survive, but it's up to the world they live in to teach them what they should and shouldn't do and what they shouldn't but can without consequence do anyway.
i think that good vs evil is how u percieve evil, and how u were raised as a child. which is as wut every1 else has said nature vs nurture. but i think that evil things can bring out the good in other people n vica versa.
